class="ez-toc-section-end">

Negative SEO (sometimes called anti-SEO), in short, refers to attempts to damage a website’s ranking or trust signals outside the site owner’s control, via third-party actors. In practice, though, the term is often used far more broadly and loosely than it should be.

Negative SEO refers to

competitors,

automation networks,

spam systems
and the like making deliberate attempts to manipulate signals against a site. However, not every suspicious data point, anomaly or bad backlink is a sign of negative SEO.

Terms usually mentioned in the same breath include:

Negative SEO (the general umbrella term)

Google Bowling (an old-school tactic of “getting a competitor penalised”)

Bot manipulation (tampering with behavioural or crawl signals)

The names differ, but the goal is the same: to make the algorithm see the site as riskier or less relevant than it really is.

There’s a crucial distinction here. Google’s oft-repeated line that “malicious signals are largely ignored” isn’t wrong in itself, but it is incomplete. Google tolerates isolated spam signals most of the time; however, when several weak points are stressed at once, algorithmic fluctuations can occur.

Here’s the sentence that matters:

Negative SEO rarely works through a single signal; it takes effect when several weak points are stressed at the same time.

That’s why negative SEO can’t be diagnosed from a “spam backlink list” or “strange traffic” alone. The real question is how these signals affect your existing setup.

In the next section, we’ll clear up the biggest source of confusion: why negative SEO and bot traffic are not the same thing.

Negative SEO vs Bot Traffic: Not the Same Thing

The most common mistake in negative SEO discussions is labelling every unusual traffic pattern as an “attack”. The reality is this: bot traffic, in fact, is a natural part of the internet, and most of it is harmless from an SEO perspective. The problem isn’t the bot’s presence; it’s which signal it distorts and where it shows up.

Bot traffic, at its core, is automated systems accessing a site or its data. It can serve very different purposes:

search engines crawling the site,

data scraping,

spam networks,

fake session generation
— among others. They can’t all be lumped together.

Bots that don’t harm SEO usually include:

Googlebot and other search engine crawlers

Verification, monitoring or security bots

Scraping bots that crawl content but don’t generate behaviour

Their purpose is indexing, visibility or data collection; they don’t behave like users and don’t distort behavioural signals.

The problematic bots are the ones that imitate users. In particular, bots that:

enter and leave within seconds,

don’t scroll,

generate no interaction,

show similar device and screen resolution patterns
— these bots can artificially drag down behavioural signals in GA4. This sometimes creates the impression that “someone is running negative SEO”, but that isn’t always the case.

There’s another crucial distinction here:
Negative SEO bots and ad click-fraud bots are not the same thing.

Negative SEO bots aim to distort SEO signals (behaviour, crawling, trust).

Click-fraud bots, by contrast, don’t target rankings; they aim at draining your ad budget instead.

Their effects, footprints and remedies are completely different.

A simple framework to keep things clear:

Crawl bot → indexing and discovery

Fake engagement bot → distorting behavioural signals

DDoS → availability and performance problem

Click fraud → budget and ad sabotage

Finally, let’s address the most overlooked point.
Ghost spam and referrer spam are types of bot that never actually reach your site. They only pollute your GA4 data. In other words, they leave no trace on the server, in the logs or in real traffic.

Which is why this is worth stressing:

Polluted data does not mean your site is under attack. Clean the data first, then check the server.

In the next section, we’ll put this distinction into practice: how can you really tell if you’re under a negative SEO attack?

How to Tell If You’re Under a Negative SEO Attack

Suspicion of negative SEO usually starts with a single screen, a single metric or a single chart. Bounce rate rises in GA4, clicks drop in GSC or “strange” links appear in your backlink profile. And this is exactly where the biggest mistake happens: diagnosing an attack from a single signal.

Real negative SEO cases reveal themselves not through an isolated data point, but through inconsistencies that surface across different systems at the same time. So the question to ask isn’t “did something happen?” — rather,
“is there meaningful degradation in more than one place at once?” is the question.

That’s why negative SEO can’t be diagnosed by looking

only at a backlink list,

only at a traffic chart,

or only at Google’s general statements
— none of these is enough on its own.

A correct reading means looking at GA4 (behaviour), GSC (search engine signals) and link profile data together in context. A signal that seems normal on its own takes on meaning when combined with other data.

Below, we break down the three main signal groups most often seen together in real negative SEO cases.
But let’s be clear from the outset:

Seeing spammy backlinks on their own is not proof of negative SEO.

Let’s start with the most frequently misread area: behavioural signals (GA4).

Behavioural Signals (GA4)

The area where negative SEO suspicions most often arise is GA4 behavioural data. That’s because bot-driven manipulation leaves its fastest footprint in metrics that look like user behaviour. For the same reason, however, this is the most frequently misdiagnosed area.

What separates real user traffic from artificial sessions isn’t individual metrics; it’s data patterns that repeat over time that give it away. So instead of just saying “bounce rate went up”, you need to understand why and how it went up before drawing conclusions.

Behavioural signals to watch out for:

A sudden rise in bounce rate + near-zero scroll rate : Bounce rates rising out of proportion to content length, together with sessions that never scroll, deviate from real user behaviour. This is sometimes caused by bot traffic, and sometimes by poorly targeted traffic sources.

Repeating screen resolution and device combinations : When hundreds of sessions in GA4 share the same device, browser and screen resolution pattern, the likelihood of automation increases. Real user distribution is never that uniform.

Session durations clustering at 1–2 seconds : When session durations bunch into a narrow time window instead of following a natural distribution, this usually points not to user intent but to script-based traffic generation .

The crucial point here is this: none of these signals, on its own, is proof of negative SEO. Measurement errors, poorly targeted campaigns or GA4 setup issues can produce exactly the same picture.

That’s why, in cases like these, we don’t start by asking “is there an attack?” but rather “is the data being measured and read correctly?” — that’s always our first question.

Behavioural signals only make sense alongside search engine data and technical measurements — which is why a negative SEO diagnosis is never based on a single report. Instead, everything rests on reading several layers of data together; that’s how the analysis is done.

Next, we’ll cross-reference this picture with Google Search Console signals to see what holds up.

Search Engine Signals (Google Search Console)

The place where you can actually test negative SEO claims is your Google Search Console (GSC) data. That’s because the signals there are a direct reflection not of bots or third parties, but of how Google perceives your site — straight from the source.

Behavioural data raises suspicion, but GSC is where you find out whether that suspicion is a real problem — that’s the signal.

Pay attention when the following signals appear together:

Clicks falling while impressions hold steady : If CTR drops sharply for your main queries with no loss of impressions, that usually points less to rankings and more to perceived relevance and trust issues. It isn’t negative SEO on its own, but it takes on meaning when combined with behavioural signals.

Unusual fluctuations in the Crawl Stats report : Sudden spikes in crawl requests, certain URL groups being crawled disproportionately or crawl budget being used inefficiently can point to bot-driven load or structural weaknesses. The question here is less about an attack and more about what Google is being kept busy with.

Appearing for irrelevant queries : If the site starts showing up for queries it doesn’t target, that indicates its content, link profile or contextual signals are becoming blurred. This isn’t always negative SEO, but it is an important warning that signal pollution is increasing.

The critical point here is this:
none of these GSC signals, on its own, means “someone is running negative SEO on you”. Most of the time, Google tolerates deviations like these algorithmically.

The real risk is when these signals appear

alongside distorted behavioural data,

and a weak technical setup
at the same time.

That’s why GSC data should be used not to make decisions in isolation, but to cross-check against other layers of data before acting.

Next, we move on to the area that causes the most panic but is also the most misread: link profile signals.

Link Profile Signals

When people hear “negative SEO”, the first thing most of them check is their backlink list. Sudden link spikes, irrelevant anchors or links from foreign-language sites quickly lead to the conclusion that “someone is running negative SEO”. Yet the link profile is one of the diagnostic areas most prone to false alarms in SEO.

Signals you’ll often come across in practice, none of which is proof on its own:

A sudden burst of off-topic anchors : Link spikes with keywords unrelated to your brand stand out. But these are usually the product of spam networks crawling at random, and Google filters them out.

Link clusters from the same IP or subnet : Links grouped at a technical level suggest possible manipulation. But this isn’t always a targeted attack; automated directories and low-quality networks leave similar footprints.

Backlinks from irrelevant languages and countries : Links from foreign-language sites to a local site cause panic. But Google has long stopped treating out-of-context links as serious ranking signals.

The critical point to underline here is this: Seeing spammy backlinks on their own is not proof of negative SEO. The genuinely contentious issue usually starts after this: disavow.

In its guidelines, Google still presents the disavow tool as an option to use “when necessary”. In practice, however, there is considerable uncertainty about how effective this function really is. In our own projects and controlled tests, it’s hard to say with confidence that heavy disavow work produces a meaningful, consistent improvement in rankings or visibility.

This points to two realities:

Google already largely ignores bad links algorithmically.

The algorithm’s real decision-making goes far beyond what the guidelines describe, and it is closed by nature.

What Google actually takes into account doesn’t always match what it merely offers as something you “can do”. At times, too, you can see tools in the field that nudge site owners into taking action, yet have only a limited effect.

That’s why, on the link profile side, the biggest risk is not an attack but this: misinterpretation + hasty intervention.

Cleaning up a backlink list can create more new uncertainty than it resolves. Only link signals that deteriorate alongside behavioural and search engine data, in the same direction, take on meaning.

When making the diagnosis, the question to ask is:

Are these links actually having an effect, or do they just look unsettling?

In the next section, we’ll look at the most common negative SEO techniques behind these signals, and at how well they actually work in practice.

The Most Common Negative SEO Techniques

Negative SEO rarely relies on a single method; it’s usually a combination of several tactics aimed at stressing different weak points at once. But most of these techniques are far less effective than people assume. With Google where it is today, most methods are either tolerated or have only a limited, temporary effect for the brand.

Below, we summarise the negative SEO techniques we come across most often in the field, looking at what they do, whether they actually work and how Google treats them for each one.

Spam / toxic backlink bombardment : The aim is to weaken trust signals by associating the site with low-quality links. Current algorithms largely ignore links like these. But if the link profile is already weak, temporary fluctuations may occur.

Distorting behavioural signals with bot traffic : Aims to drag down bounce, scroll and engagement metrics by generating fake sessions. On its own, this doesn’t cause a lasting ranking loss; but broken measurement can lead to the wrong optimisation decisions. Google doesn’t use behavioural signals on their own as a penalty mechanism.

Copying content before it’s indexed : Newly published content is quickly copied and replicated on other sites to blur originality signals. Google usually identifies the original source correctly; the problem mostly arises on sites with slow indexing.

Fake brand complaints and reputation attacks : Aims to damage brand perception through forums, complaint sites or comment sections. The SEO impact is indirect and usually limited. Google doesn’t use signals like these as a standalone ranking factor.

Hacked links and hidden redirects : Unauthorised links or redirects injected into a site are one of the riskiest scenarios. This is a genuine security problem, and less an SEO issue than a matter of site integrity — Google expects a technical fix in cases like these.

DDoS and site slowdown attempts : Aims to disrupt site availability and performance. Temporary ranking fluctuations may occur, but unless the impact is sustained, no algorithmic penalty follows.

Click fraud (not SEO, but growth sabotage) : A tactic aimed at draining ad budgets. It doesn’t target SEO directly, but it indirectly weakens marketing performance. It falls within the Google Ads ecosystem.

Looking at this picture, one thing becomes clear: most negative SEO techniques do not cause lasting damage on their own or in the short term. Where there is an impact, it usually has to do with existing structural weaknesses being triggered by the attack.

In the next section, we’ll look at how resilient Google is to these attempts, and why the expected “penalty” usually never arrives.

How Resilient Is Google to Negative SEO Attacks?

Whether negative SEO really works depends largely on how Google treats these signals — and plenty of myths are still doing the rounds on this point. The real picture is calmer and far less dramatic.

Since the Penguin update, Google’s core approach has been clear:
neutralise malicious links rather than penalise them.
In other words, most spammy, toxic or irrelevant backlinks aren’t counted as ranking signals by the algorithm at all. This explains why the “a competitor built links to me and I dropped” story rarely reflects reality.

But there’s a detail that usually gets overlooked. Google doesn’t evaluate any single signal in isolation. When behavioural degradation, technical problems and contextual weaknesses appear at the same time, algorithmic fluctuations can happen. This isn’t a “penalty”; it’s more that the system no longer sees the site as being as strong as it once was.

So it’s important to make this distinction clearly:

A manual action, applied by Google after human review, is an explicit sanction — and a rare one.

An algorithmic drop, by contrast, usually stems from a disrupted balance of signals and happens automatically.

Most negative SEO cases don’t end in a manual action. But that doesn’t mean there’s no risk.

This is also where disavow comes in. Google’s guidelines still list disavow as a tool that “can be used”. In practice, however, disavow files prepared incorrectly or in a hurry can deepen the problem instead of solving it. That’s because disavowing links the algorithm already ignores sometimes ends up with site owners weakening their own set of signals in the process.

Here’s the contradiction:
Google never fully explains what it genuinely takes into account and what it merely offers as “optional”. The guidelines point the way, but the algorithm’s real weightings are deliberately kept under wraps. This sometimes pushes site owners into unnecessary actions.

This section can be summed up in a single sentence:

Google generally ignores bad links — not site owners who misinterpret bad data.

That’s why the strongest defence against negative SEO isn’t knee-jerk intervention, but reading the data correctly and prioritising correctly.

In the next section, we’ll put this approach into practice: how to protect your site from negative SEO, and when to step in.

How to Protect Your Site from Negative SEO

The most effective approach to negative SEO is not constant panic, but regular, measured monitoring carried out consistently. The steps below are enough to catch real risks early — anything more usually leads to unnecessary intervention.

Ongoing backlink monitoring (no knee-jerk disavowing): Tracking new and unusual links with Ahrefs, Semrush or the GSC Links report is enough. The aim here isn’t to hunt for attacks, but to see what Googlebot is spending its time on.

Publish content → get it indexed fast: Getting new content indexed without delay reduces the risk from copying. On WordPress sites, solutions such as Rank Math Instant Indexing are enough to speed up this process.

Security, WAF and rate limiting: Abnormal requests can be throttled with WAF solutions such as Cloudflare. This is a critical layer of protection for infrastructure health rather than for SEO.

Brand and mention monitoring (social listening): Mentions of your brand name, products and domain should be monitored regularly. This process is usually called social listening and helps you spot reputation-driven signal damage early.

The common goal of these steps is: not to hunt for attacks, but to keep your data in order. In the next section, we turn to the most critical question: when do you really need professional help?

When Do You Need Professional Help?

Not every suspected negative SEO case calls for professional intervention. In most cases, the right move is to do nothing and monitor the data for a while. But there are some situations where, rather than your own interpretation, an experienced outside eye is needed.

Professional support makes sense particularly in these scenarios:

Traffic is falling but the data is contradictory: If GA4, GSC and the server side are telling different stories, the problem usually runs deeper than it appears.

Several signals are deteriorating at once: If behaviour, crawling, visibility and the link profile are all deviating together, one-off explanations fall short.

You’re asking “I did SEO, so why did I drop?”: The problem here is usually not an attack, but misdiagnosis or poorly prioritised optimisation.

An important reminder at this point:

Negative SEO is usually not an attack, but a problem of misread data.
That’s why diagnosis comes before optimisation.

Brandaft is an Istanbul-based corporate SEO agency — and in cases like these, we start not with “intervention”, but with diagnosis first.
